TSMA Manufacturer/Educator Solutions Group identify barriers for success

The newly established TSMA Manufacturer/Educator Solutions Group, led by Troy Haugen of Lakes Country Service Cooperative, held its first meeting (virtually) on January 11, 2021. The Solutions Group was established as a way to encourage relevant conversation between TSMA’s manufacturing and K-12 members. The anticipated outcome is a fresh approach in ongoing efforts to fill the skills gap for manufacturers in the region.

The inaugural meeting focused on identifying barriers to a success. Educators identified barriers to a successful career and technical education program within their school. Manufacturers identified challenges that prohibit successful engagement with schools, and with youth and parents. The list of barriers ranged from communication challenges to labor age restrictions to teacher licensing to graduation requirements and more.

Discussion will continue via virtual meetings on as-needed basis. Amy Johnson, TSMA Assistant Director, serves as the Group’s staff liaison. Representing K-12 schools are: Eric Sawatzke from West Central Area, Bonita Oestreich from Parkers Prairie, Dustin Steenblock from Ashby and Brian Schornack from New York Mills. Representing industry are: Mark Petersen from ITW Heartland, Nicole McDonald from Brunswick New York Mills, and Tony Hanson from Alexandria Technical & Community College.
